Abstract
    Uncertainty in seismic hazard analysis arises out of the intrinsic variability of seismological parameters and also the dearth of knowledge and understanding of earthquake activity. For regions of the world such as the United Kingdom where significant earthquakes occur infrequently, the prospects for the recording of new important data in the near future are slim, and the maximum possible use of existing data must be made if the uncertainties associated with ignorance are to be reduced. Some ways in which this can be achieved are outlined here, in an argument in favour of lowering uncertainty through further research than accepting a much higher level of statistical error as a necessity.
