This work, in response to questions which are posed in the study of internal factors and their hierarchisation, attempts to analyse a short behavioural sequence on the basis of a quantitative observation treated statistically. The analysis consists of a description of thirty fights of Tilapia mossambica (Cichlid fish), to count the fixed action patterns. These movements, classified and counted by relating them to those preceding or following, have shown a correlation (measured by the a coefficients). With a factorial analysis method (calculated by Spearman’s coefficient + factors loading extraction + Varimax analytical rotation), we have sought to account for these primitive correlations by the new ones, those expressed in terms of less numerous common factors. This analysis shows the three common causal factors. Two were identified as being the evidences of attack and flight tendancies. Next, an attempt to interprate the third factor is proposed. It appears that one can attribute it to several causes, of which one depends on the sexual maturity of the fish, necessary for the kind of fight observed, and the other reflects the particular situation characterized by the similarity of motivation of the males. The work ends with some critical remarks summarizing the difficulties and the promise encountered in the application of the tested method. The author discusses briefly the double causality attack-flight hypothesis, responsible for animal fight.
