Abstract
    An offshore monopile has an influence on the local flow field. When no countermeasures are taken, the disturbed flow field generally leads to local scouring of the sea bed. Often, the expected scour depth is not acceptable for the stability of the structure and the application of a scour bottom protection is required. For the design of the extent of the scour protection, it is valuable to investigate the area in which the flow field is disturbed by the presence of the structure. The disturbed velocity profile around the base of a monopile structure is investigated using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements in a scale model of the monopile in two physical wave flumes. PIV is a powerful measuring technique to obtain instantaneous whole flow field measurements. To assess possible scale effects, the PIV measurements are carried out at two different scales. The velocity fields in non-breaking and breaking regular wave conditions are measured on both scales. The results show only a limited influence of the breaking process on the flow velocities near the bottom. However, a significant influence of the scale on the behaviour of the flow separation is noticed.
