Abstract
A population belonging to the Diamysis bahirensis species group is reported from the Atlantic lagoon Ria de Aveiro (NW Portugal). The specimens were collected with a sled-type sampler among macrophytes (1.0-2.5 m depth), during a study of the suprabenthic fauna (June 1995-June 1996). A maximum density of 51 ind. m-2 was recorded in June 1995 (salinity = 26%°). Ovigerous females (9-14% of the population) occurred at the end of spring. This is the westemmost record of Diamysis. This genus is considered to be of Tethyan origin and D. bahirensis is consistently mentioned as a Mediterranean endemic species. Information on the morphology, reproductive biology and ecology of the population living in Ria de Aveiro is given, and its presence in this Atlantic coastal system is discussed as probably due to ballast water transport from a western Mediterranean locality.
