Abstract:
Het Laboratoire de Biologie Marine (BMAR) van de Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) bestudeert in hoofdzaak bioluminescentie. Vroeger werd echter ook onderzoek verricht naar mariene biodiversiteit ter hoogte van scheepswrakken in het Belgisch deel van de Noordzee. Deze onderzoeksgroep werkt op regelmatige basis samen met tal van andere onderzoeksinstellingen over gans de wereld zoals het Victoria Museum en de Universiteiten van Sydney en Perth (Australië), de Universiteiten van Bergen (Noorwegen), Göteborg en Lund (Zweden), Otago University (Nieuw Zeeland), University of California - Santa Barbara Campus (USA) , Ryukyus University (Japan) en Arago Laboratory en het marien station van Roscoff (Frankrijk). BMAR maakt eveneens deel uit van CIBIM, het interuniversitaire centrum voor Mariene Biologie.

Het mariene onderzoek van het laboratorium richt zich op volgende thema’s:
- Biodiversiteit van bioluminescentie;
- Bioluminescentie bij haaien;
- De controlemechanismen, functies en evolutie van bioluminescentie;
- De oorsprong van mariene luminescerende componenten;
- Bioluminescentie bij de pelagische borstelworm Tomopteris.
