Abstract:
De onderzoeksgroep Biogéochimie et Modélisation du Système Terre (BGéoSys) van de Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) verricht onderzoek naar de biogeochemie van continentale en mariene systemen, de kinetiek van ‘water - gesteente - micro-organismen’ processen en het modelleren van het systeem aarde. De groep richt zich voornamelijk op de koolstof- en nutriëntencycli en hun rol in het vormgeven van het vroegere en huidige klimaat.

Meer specifiek richt het onderzoek zich tot:
- Modelleren van het systeem aarde;
- Hydrologische en biogeochemische cycli (C, N, P, Si, S, Fe): verwering, land - zee - atmosfeer uitwisseling, mariene (bio-)geochemie, vroege diagenese en sedimentologie;
- Geochemie van contaminanten (zware metalen, N, P) in aquatische en bodemsystemen;
- Geomicrobiologische processen ter hoogte van de ‘water - gesteente - micro-organismen’-interface;
- Koolstofcyclus, broeikasgassen (CO2, CH4, N2O), verzuring oceanen, mariene calcificatie en klimaat;
- Biogeochemische en geomicrobiologische dynamiek in sedimentaire systemen;
- Paleomilieu en -klimaat: archivering en opsporen van processen in geologische records;
- Water en fossiele brandstoffen als hulpbronnen.
